Duration: 11 days

The trek to Pikey Peak around Jiri lies at the lower elevations of Khumbu. The trek is an opportunity to view the peaks of Everest region from a distance. The sunrise and sunset views are great, and during the trek you will have panoramic vistas of the tallest mountains on the planet. It is a less crowded trail, and a relatively new one.

To reach Pikey, you will start with a flight to Solu. Alternatively, you can begin from Kathmandu, going in to Shivalaya, and trekking all the way to Pikey peak. It is technically not one of the high-altitude peaks but it is tall, nonetheless (at 4,065 m). Once at the top, you will have a wonderful panoramic views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Cho Oyu, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Thamsherku and of course, Mt. Everest! Once at the top, you would not even want to name the rest of the peaks – just enjoy and capture the shots on and on.

The people who inhabit this place are mostly the Sherpa, Tamang and Magar. Hence, you will see a pre-dominance of chortens, mani walls, stupas and monasteries. Some notable ones are the Monastery of Thupten and the Monastery of Chewang. Further down Pikey, we will come across the Monastery of Thutungchhelli. From there we travel to Junbesi, cross Lamajura Pass  to arrive at Sete, and then travel back to Kathmandu.

This trekking trail lies at a diverse geographical terrain. Hence, you might come across wonderful fauna such as the Himalayan Thar, too. For orchid enthusiasts, this trail has surprises in reserve. Magnolia and rhododendron are the predominant flora in some parts of the trail. If you happen to be here in August during the rainy season, you will see pilgrims in the lakes and ponds of this region who have come for a dip. You can visit Pikey throughout the year but we recommend you visit there in spring and autumn. Regardless of age and physical fitness, all you need to visit Pikey is a desire to get into nature, and a good habit of walking.
