Duration: 1 day

Located in the district of Gorkha, the temple of Manakamana lies on the highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara. A cable car operating from the station of Kurintar will whisk you up to the temple in around 15 minutes. The revered Hindu temple is situated atop a high hill that provides an excellent view of the surrounding valleys and low-lying terraced forests. Beautiful views of Mt. Manaslu and Annapurna mountain range are visible from the temple area on a clear day.

The temple itself has a square base looking across a huge sacred magnolia tree. There are four floors on the temple, that are tiered in pagoda style roofs. The roof is plated with brass sheets. In Nepali, the name Manakamana is a combination of two words – ‘mana’ and ‘kamana’ – which means wish-fulfilling. It is believed that Goddess Manakamana grants the wishes of all those who visit her shrine to worship her.

  • Early in the morning, depart from Kathmandu and after a leisurely drive of around three hours, arrive in Kurintar. Get off the bus, get on the cable car and in 15 minutes, you will reach the temple. Spend some hours at the top and return to Kurintar and then drive onwards to Pokhara.
