Janakpur holds a significant place in the history of Nepal. It was the capital and seat of wise King Janak; but Janakpur is by far, remembered as the birthplace of Sita, daughter of Janak. The epic Ramayan depicts the life and times of this father-daughter duo and how, being related with Lord Ram, played decisive roles at the time.
The Temple of Janaki located inside the city is a much revered pilgrimage site with thousands of people coming each year. The temple is dedicated to Sita and her husband Lord Ram. Logical enough, the city is swarmed by pilgrims and worshippers during the festival of Bibaha Panchami, the approximate date of the marriage of Ram and Sita. During the week, brightly clothed dramatists and artists enact the ceremony with music, food and festivity.
Janakpur being the cultural center of Mithila region, you will get to witness the culture of people living in the city for thousands of years. Janakpur can be reached by regular bus and plane service from Kathmandu and other cities. A decent number of lodges and accommodations are available in the city. The best time to visit Janakpur is during October-November.
