Nepal is exceptionally rich in avian life. There are over 850 recorded species of birds in this tiny nation. Thanks to a diverse geography and climate Nepal is home to over 8% of the total bird population on the planet. From the lowland jungles of Tarai to dense oak and rhododendron forests of the hilly region, and even at the high-altitude of the mountains, there are at least some species who call it home.
In Kathmandu valley alone there are over 500 species of birds. The surrounding hills of Shivapuri, Godavari & Fulchoki, Nagarjun and Kakani offer a varied ecology. Plus, the wetlands of the valley create a wonderful opportunity for you to witness many species of birds. Popular birds of the valley include babblers, warblers, tits, thrushes, minivets, eagles, woodpeckers, drongo, spotted forktail and Tibetan siskin. Inside the valley, the list of birds continues on to include blue magpies, pheasants, Bonelli’s eagles, Himalayan barbets and other migratory birds.
Outside the valley in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, you can experience Nepal’s sub-tropical climate with some of the best days watching birds in South-Asia. In a mere space of around 175 square kilometers, you can see a whooping 280 species of birds. Among these, there are 20 species of duck, ibises, stork, swamp partridges, herons, egrets, Bengal floricans and other migratory birds.
Although you can consider the whole country as an observatory, more popular bird-watching spots in Nepal are Kathmandu Valley and surroundings, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Annapurna Conservation Area, Bardia National Park and Chitwan National Park.
